Mumbai's student community hasn't been left untouched by the wave of support and protests across India the suicide of 26-year-old research scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad.

Students across Mumbai showing solidarity with Hyderabad Central University's Dalit scholar organised a series of protests in the city on Friday. But what was supposed to be a peaceful protest turned ugly due to the rough behaviour of security guards present at the scene.

A protest conducted at Mumbai University's Kalina campus on Friday saw protesters alleging inappropriate treatment by campus security guards.

Sushma Shirsat, one of the student protesters, told mid-day, "All students had come together for one cause without any preconceived notions. The protest at Kalina campus was a peaceful event with students holding placards and posters demanding justice for Rohith. There was some slogan shouting asking university authorities to rise up against such cases. But suddenly, security officials of the campus came charging toward us and started hurling abuses while pushing us away. This is so unfair."

When contacted university officials, however, denied any such behavior by their security guards. Leeladhar Bansod, PRO of the Mumbai University said, "There was Satyanarayana Pooja organised by some university staff members on Friday and students too were protesting at the same venue which led to a few arguments. But there was no big issue as it was resolved in no time."
