The Dr HD Kanga Cricket League returned to the city after a month of unsuitable weather and cricketers from the city grabbed the opportunity to excel for their respective clubs with both hands.


Harmeet claims 9 for 58
At Marine Drive, a nine-wicket haul by former India under-19 and Mumbai left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh helped Payyade SC triumph over hosts Greater Mumbai Police Sports Club at the Police Gymkhana. Leg-spinner Parag Khanapurkar claimed the one wicket of Rajesh Tandel (35) to restrict Mumbai Police to 154.

In response, Praful Waghela (59) and Harsh Tank (43) steered their side to 159 for four to earn three points. Mumbai Police's left-arm spinner Neeraj Singh took all the four wickets to fall.

"Nobody expected such a performance. I am bowling well and I've matured as a bowler. I am starting to know myself better than before. I don't miss any opportunity to perform," Harmeet, 25, told mid-day yesterday.

Pawar slams ton
In another Division 'A' encounter, Muslim United SC's Prathamesh Pawar's century (108 off 79 balls) helped his side declare at 205 for eight against hosts National CC at Cross Maidan. Pawar slammed 13 fours during his aggressive knock while National pacer Chinmay Patil claimed three for 29. National ended the day with 113 for six with Krunal Nar top-scoring with 43 in the drawn match. Left-arm spinner Salil Agharkar took 3-33 for the visitors.

Mumbai pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, who had to miss the opening match of the ongoing Duleep Trophy tournament in Lucknow due to viral fever, got himself into a groove before leaving for the Duleep Trophy. Representing New Hind SC against Shivaji Park Gymkhana (SPG) at Matunga, Dhawal scored an unbeaten 54 and took one wicket for just eight runs.

Skipper Bhavin Thakkar scored 80 as the Matunga side declared at 190 for six. In reply, SPG scored 91 for four.

Century for Vinit too
Mumbai batsman Vinit Indulkar lit up the 'B' division with an unbeaten 102 (9x4, 5x6) for Cricket Club of India (CCI) who scored 219 for four against Dadar Parsee Colony Sports Club (DPCSC) at Matunga.

DPCSC were lucky to escape defeat as they ended the day with 150 for nine. New Hind's medium pacer Krutik Hangewadi claimed three for 33.

Gritty Arjun fights hard
Sachin Tendulkar's son Arjun displayed good temperament by spending nearly one hour at the crease for his 15 runs for Parel SC against Apollo CC in the 'B' division at Shivaji Park.

Parel SC declared at 158 -9 to which Apollo responded by scoring 133 for six in a drawn match. Left-arm pacer Arjun, bowled five overs to claim one wicket for 14 runs. In the opposition team was former Mumbai wicketkeeper-batsman and coach Sulakshan Kulkarni.

"I faced Arjun and it seems he is an aggressive bowler. The more he bowls the better he will get," said Kulkarni.
