Colaba and Andheri-based customers of telecom service provider, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), have one additional monsoon-related woe in their list this season, as they have been unable to access the Internet and their landlines for nearly a month.

Colaba-based subscribers explained that they have complained several times to the nearby MTNL office, only to receive the standard answer that the officials are “working on it” and that “there have been some issues due to heavy showers”.

Hunaid Khorakiwala, a Colaba resident, explained that he has been in constant touch with an official who continued to give him false hope, by assuring that the issue will get sorted out soon.

Sushma Kakatkar’s office, Pam Systems Private Limited, is in Elysuim Mansion where firms have been severely affected by the issue. “We are into LPG filling and this is our head office. We deal with our international and national clients over the phone and Internet.

Ever since the MTNL services got disrupted, we had to opt for another Wifi service, as the officials stopped entertaining our complaints. The new Wifi service has drastically increased our expenses in these 25 days,” she explains. Forty-five-year-old advertising professional Sylvestar da Cunha, who is the managing director of Dacunha Associates, said, “We are facing major issues because of these non-functional landlines.

Only two of them are working because of which our clients aren’t able to contact us. Initially, only one line was working and it was only after my colleague’s repeated complaints that the second line started working on Friday,” he said, adding that advertisement firms need to remain reachable via telephone, as clients, media and production houses get in touch with firms using the company number.

Residents of Andheri, too, claimed that they have been facing issues with their MTNL landlines. “A few people still depend on landlines. I am unable to contact my relatives for the last two weeks due to non-functional landlines,” said Babaji Krishna Sawant, a Lokhandwala resident.

When contacted, BV Mohite, Divisional Engineer of the area said, “There in an issue with the wiring which needs to be taken care, for which the road has to be dug up. We are taking permission from the road department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), since it is a major road. This problem cannot be ignored as it is causing an inconvenience to customers. This will soon be resolved.”
