Senior citizen from Andheri fractures his ankle while participating in the 4.3-km event yesterday; his wife is irked that camp doctors referred him to a govt hospital far from home
The city woke up with Mumbai Marathon fever yesterday and thousands participated in the various categories of the event. People from all walks of life, including the elite, people with disability and senior citizens participated with loads of zest and energy. While many runners faced minor setbacks and were treated at the two medical camps, a 65-year-old man fractured his right leg while participating in the 4.3-kilometre event for senior citizens.

Though Andheri resident Randeep Chopra twisted his ankle and the doctors at the medical camp suspected a fracture, which meant that the senior citizen would be restricted to bed rest for around 15 days, he refused to be disheartened. Randeep said that he was looking forward to running the 21.1-kilometre half-marathon on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link next year and and said he planned to practise sufficiently to take up the challenge.
His wife Shakti however was in no mood to let her husband’s enthusiasm rub off on her after doctors at the medical camp asked her to shift Chopra to a government hospital far from their residence to get an X-ray done.
Shakti demanded that an ambulance be provided to drop them at Nanavati Hospital, which is close to their Andheri residence. “I wish we had a choice of taking him to somewhere close to my residence, as I was low on money and had left our debit and credit cards at home. How were we to know that something like this would happen? My husband is a regular jogger. If he is admitted to a hospital close to our residence, then it will be much easier to go for treatment and check ups. Unfortunately, even our son is not in town to help us,” Shakti said.
Talking about the desire to keep running, Randeep said, “I love to run and even at this age I am always involved with health care. This time however, it is very unfortunate that this happened, as I was eager to complete my run. The pain in my leg is unbearable and I am not able to stand, leave alone walk. This will not stop me and I aim to participate in the half marathon as it passes through Bandra-Worli Sea Link next year.”
The doctor who treated Randeep at Asian Heart Hospital medical base camp one, Dr Vijay D’silva, said, “We believe he has fractured his ankle and needs an X-ray, and an immediate checkup at GT Hospital.”u00a0
