It's written in almost every handouts circulated that the Mumbai marathon brings the entire city on the streets, either running or helping the road runners with water and energy munchies. After yesterday's marathon, Kenya's Joshua Kipkorir (2:09:50), who clinched silver in the Elite men's 41km marathon along with all the Elite women podium finishers, may not pay heed to such buttery lines. After the race, Kipkorir, who vomited during the last kilometre of the race due to dehydration, said the drinking water outlets were not visible and the organisers ought to have done a better job. One lakh 40 thousand litres of water along with 27 water stations were available on race day. "I couldn't see the water stations properly," he said.

Kenyan Bornes Kitur, who won the International Elite women's marathon echoed the same sentiments. "There were water problems on the route. That does affect the performance of any athlete. I feel there should be more water made available for athletes especially on the uphill," she added.

Getaneh Tessema, coach of Ethiopians Chaltu Tafa (2:33:03) and Tigist Girma (2:33:19), who bagged silver and bronze respectively in the women's Elite marathon was disappointed with the organisers. "The other runners (amateurs) were running in the middle of the road and they were listening to music, so you can't blame them as they too were running the marathon. If these hurdles were avoided then Chaltu and Tigist could have finished three minutes earlier. You can't see the drink stations properly also. These problems shouldn't occur again then it will be a better race," Tessema said.

A total number of 42,379 participants took part in the Mumbai marathon. The amateur marathon saw in attendance 6342 athletes including the elites. The half marathon attracted 14663 participants including the elites while the Dream Run saw 19980 runners in the event.
