Mumbai: Minor attempts suicide to protect family from molester's wrath

A 15-year-old girl attempted suicide yesterday after one of her three molesters, and his father, threatened to kill her and her family if she went to the police to complain against the alleged harassment she was subjected to in the lift on Monday.

The girl is currently admitted to the ICU at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri (E) and is battling for her life. Officials from the MIDC police station said the victim and the accused, two minors and an adult, reside in the same building near the police station. They said the incident occurred while the girl was on her way home.

The girl stormed out of the lift after slapping her neighbour (one of the accused) and informed her elder sister about it. Later, they decided to inform the boys’ parents before filing a police complaint. When they visited the residence of one of the accused, the boy’s father allegedly abused them, called them liars, and even threatened to kill them if they approached the police.

Afraid that the accused and their parents would harm her family because of her, the victim consumed washing detergent. The girl informed the police about her molestation and death threats after they came to the hospital to record her statement, as it was a suicide case. It was the hospital staff that had informed the police about the girl.

“Based on the girl’s statement, we have taken the three alleged molesters into custody and booked them for molestation and criminal intimidation,” said PSI Lakshman Lokhande. All the accused were booked under Sections 34 (common intention), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 354 (A) (physical contacts and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures) of the IPC.
