A 10-ft-long python caused panic in Ishwar Nagar, Borivli, last night. Residents of the area calmed down only after a snake catcher was called to the scene and took the critter away.

Around 10.30 pm, residents of the colony behind the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), spotted the snake lying on the grass. One of them immediately called up snake catcher Ganesh Karvi (20), who arrived within 10 minutes.

Karvi rushed out in such a hurry that he forgot to bring along his usual paraphernalia. He told mid-day, “The python was lying in the grass and because I did not have my usual equipment with me, catching it was difficult. I somehow found a stick close by and caught hold of the snake after struggling for 15-20 minutes. This snake weighs around 40 kg.”

Karvi has caught 20-25 snakes, some of which were poisonous, in the last four years. Ganesh successfully catches green vine snakes, oriental ratsnakes and Russell's viper, among others. Karvi releases the snakes he catches inside SGNP.
