Irate parents continued their protest for the second day at the Malad school where a peon was arrested for raping a 4-year-old. Angered by the school's continuing apathy on the matter, the mob turned violent and cops had to resort to mild lathi-charge to contain the situation. They also detained 13 protesters for disturbing decorum.

How it happened
According to the parents, a meeting was scheduled on Wednesday at noon with the management, but no one from the school showed up. When the parents were denied entry to the school, they went to Dindoshi police station to demand that the management also be booked in the rape case. The police asked the parents to wait until the conclusion of the investigation.

The confused mob shouted slogans against the school and Mumbai Police and started heading towards the Western Express Highway to block the road. "The police to stop them, which is when the situation turned violent," said one parent.
"We skipped work and went to the school, only to see that none of them had turned up. This obviously is going to lead to more anger. The least the management can do is to meet parents and reassure us," said another parent. Amid this confusion, the school remains closed. It has been decided that the management will now meet parents today.
Cop speak
DCP (Zone XII) Vinay Rathod, who was present at the spot, told mid-day, "A total of 10 men and three women were detained under Sections 68 and 69 of the Bombay Police Act. The investigation is on, meanwhile, maintaining law and order in the area is an important responsibility for us."

During the protest, the survivor's mother also lashed out over the rumours surrounding the authenticity of the case. The DCP refrained from commenting on the medical report of the survivor or the accused. The accused will remain in police custody until August 11, and Rathod said they might ask for an extension.
The other side
One of the school trustees said, "We discussed the parents' suggestions and most of them have been agreed to. We will also meet parents to reassure them. We are cooperating with the police investigation. Management is not involved anywhere and the investigation will find out the truth."
Asked about the complainant's allegation that the school tried to suppress the incident, the trustee said, "This is completely untrue."
