A five-day-old boy was found near Mithi river close to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivli around 7.15 am today.

The baby, swaddled in a cloth and lying in filth, was spotted by a jogger and Borivli East Satish Singh, who was drawn to the wails of the newborn. Singh alerted the police, who rescued the baby and took him to Shatabdi Hospital in Borivli East. The police are now looking for the baby’s family.

“I was jogging near the spot around 7.15 am. I followed the cries and found the baby lying near the fence of the Mithi river close to SGNP,” said Singh.

The police suspect that the baby was abandoned at the spot under the guise of yesterday’s Chhath Puja offering ceremony.

Satish Rao Rane, senior inspector of Kasturba police station, said the baby has been declared out of danger. “An investigation is currently on,” Rane said.
