Identified as Mustafa Mansoor Valele, the Mumbra resident, said the police, was muttering something continuously when they took him from the spot to the police station. Officers said he kept asking ‘parso ravan ko kyun jalaya?’ and then start crying. The police then took him to GT hospital for a check-up.

Road rage
The Azad Maidan police said Valele was roaming around in South Mumbai, starting from Marine Drive around noon. From there, he walked towards Fashion Street through Khau Galli, where he tried to attack a few people; one person sustained minor injuries.

After reaching Fashion Street, he sat on a divider and kept muttering to himself.

“The BMC was coming to demolish a few stalls, we were preoccupied with that… I saw the youngster on the divider, hammer in hand, mumbling something,” said Ramashankar, owner of a jeans stall.

A police van was at the spot as civic officials were to arrive at any minute. Witnesses said Valele suddenly got up and came towards a banyan tree having a small temple next to it.

“He thrashed a complaint box placed by the Mumbai police and started yelling, flashing his hammer. We all got scared. Many pedestrians started running away, it was really frightening,” said Ramashankar.

Cops on the scene
Sub-inspector Sopan Jagtap of the Azad Maidan police was present at the spot with his team when it happened. He tried to talk to Valele, but the youngster got furious and slapped him. Jagtap’s colleagues sitting in the van then ran to help him.

“He tried to attack me with the hammer but missed. Constable NS Jadhav, however, got injured while trying to control him,” said Jagtap, who got bruises on his hand.

The riot control force, on standby for a rally at Azad Maidan, also came to help. Finally, five policemen managed to overpower him. An officer said shop owners and pedestrians had gathered and wanted the youth handed over to them. “We requested them to cooperate and took him to the police station,” he added.

The police have arrested Valele under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code; he will be produced in court on Friday.
