Commuters at Byculla railway station witnessed high drama when a group of GRP and RPF officials were seen giving tough chase to a thief, who had escaped from police custody yesterday. Police had to negotiate speeding local trains after the accused jumped on to the tracks, putting his and their lives at risk. He was nabbed 30 minutes later.

According to the RPF, sub-inspector Dadu Sarak and his staff from the CST GRP had nabbed a repeat offender identified as Anilkumar Sarabjeet Ojha, 30, at Byculla station.

The policemen were escorting him to the police station for further investigation, when Ojha managed to free himself from one of the constable’s grip near the foot overbridge of platform number 1. GRP personnel running after him started shouting to alert commuters. On hearing their screams, RPF Byculla head constable Tanaji Bhosale, who was posted on the platform, ran after Ojha.

“He started running on the track towards Chinchpokli station. When he realised that Bhosale was not too far behind, Ojha turned and started heading back to Byculla station,” said an RPF officer.

The accused’s attempt to escape could have taken a tragic turn as he jumped from one railway track to another with local trains passing from either side. After nearly 30 minutes, Bhosale and the other officers succeeded in apprehending Ojha at the end of platform number 4 of Byculla station.

Investigations revealed that Ojha had many cases against him. He was even externed from city limits. He has been arrested under sections 379 (theft), 34 (common intention) and 75 (punishment for certain offences after previous conviction) of the IPC.
