Mumbai: Now, unique 15-digit building numbers

Now, your building will get a new unique identification number, just like we have Aadhar for people.

The 15-digit number, which the BMC will use for all its official purposes is derived from the 15-digit Section Account Code SAC from the Property Tax receipt of a particular building. The BMC started applying it from Monday.

Officials said the aim was to eradicate duplication, as it is possible for different buildings to have the same name. BG Pawar, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, of BMC, confirmed the development and claimed that it will be like pincode that the postal department uses.

“The Sac number will be used for all official work. This will be the identification number for every building. We have already put this in place from Monday,” said Pawar.

Officials said searching documents using just the building name has turned out to be tedious.

“This unique number cannot be replicated. However, in terms of the building name, many building have the same name and hence finding documents related to them a tedious task.” The number can be used by residents too to find details on their property, so next time they go to the office of BMC or for any official purpose they instead of using the name of the building will have to read out the number and get details.
