Action initiated as cops feel those contesting elections could use it to influence voters
In their bid to curb malpractices before the upcoming assembly polls, police have decided to initiate action against those carrying over R50,000 without proper documentation. Officials said they suspect that those contesting the polls could use money to influence voters, hence the strict vigil.
Moreover, the police have also seized 13 country-made illegal firearms, 29 cartridges, and have initiated action against 4,813 history-sheeters as a preventive measure. “Upon questioning, anybody carrying more than Rs 50,000 will have to show the withdrawal slip, and the purpose for withdrawal.

If the person fails to do the needful, then the money will be seized and handed over to the Election Commission,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni, spokesperson, Mumbai Police. Sources in the police department said all hawala operators are under the scanner, as the cops suspect that political parties could use hawala channels to bring cash into the city and the state. The police have also set up around 13 check nakas, and are watching the railways for the same.
“We have asked people with licenced firearms to deposit their weapons. So far, 288 people have done the needful. We are also issuing non-bailable warrants against hardcore criminals. About 1,808 warrants have been executed already,” said Kulkarni.
Soon after the date for the assembly polls was declared, the district magistrate and the police commissioner reviewed the list of people with licenced firearms, and asked the shortlisted holders to deposit their weapons with the police.
