MCA announces the sum at its 79th Annual General Meeting

Mumbai Ranji-winning side to get 2 crore

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) yesterday decided to award the Ranji Trophy-winning team a prize money of Rs two crore at its 79th Annual General Meeting. The association had earlier announced Rs three crore for Ajit Agarkar’s boys.

Former MCA vice-president, Prof Ratnakar Shetty yesterday sought clarification on the issue following several media reports related to the prize money.

President Ravi Savant said: “A senior player from the Ranji team told me to do something for the players. But I told him that we will have to also look after other teams who did well in the season. Therefore, we have decided to match the board’s (BCCI) prize money and award them Rs two crore.”

Meanwhile, a resolution was passed entitling the affiliated clubs of a minimum of 10 complimentary tickets for the Indian Premier League matches. The actual demand was for a minimum of 12 tickets. The clubs used to get eight passes.

Members disagree...
The members unanimously agreed not to pass the resolution for removal of discount on tickets for international matches, a luxury its clubs have been enjoying so far. The association had proposed that the clubs would have to buy tickets from the MCA at public rates for ODIs and T20Is.

Another resolution — to name the media box after former Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray — will now be brought up at next year’s AGM since, according to Savant, naming any part or property of the MCA requires the consent from the managing committee, which was not done in this case. Former MCA president Sharad Pawar, who attended yesterday’s AGM, sought to resolve the income tax issue which is one of the association’s biggest worries.

The MCA is liable to pay approximately Rs 55 crore as income tax after their charitable trust status was taken away due to commercial use of the Bandra Kurla Complex club.

Pawar came up with a solution: “We will request BCCI to approach the Indian government to settle this issue. We will propose a fixed sum that MCA will pay every year to BCCI.” The members appreciated Pawar’s solution.

Towards the end of the AGM, Prof Shetty raised a storm by alleging that an MCA office-bearer was involved in black-marketing 150 tickets of the India-Pakistan T20 match in Ahmedabad.

“I have seen the MCA letter which was signed by the joint secretaries to book 150 tickets of the T20 match. I have learnt that someone in Ahmedabad took those tickets and sold it for more than the printed price,” said the former MCA vice-president. President Savant assured an inquiry into the issue.u00a0
