Harshad Patel, a scribe with Gujarati newspaper Janmabhoomi, had been fighting for his life after the cop’s son rammed his bike into the 53-year-old in Mira Road; accused had fled the spot after the incident
A-53-year-old journalist died last morning from the injuries that he had sustained from a hit-and-run incident involving a bike driven by a constable’s son, in Mira Road on May 4. Harshad Patel was a resident of Mira Road, and a journalist with Mumbai-based Gujarati newspaper Janmabhoomi.

On that fateful day, Patel was walking back home on 90 Feet Road in Mira Road when the speeding bike slammed into him. The rider of the bike (MH- 04-CX-4977) was a constable’s son, identified as Sagar Rajaram Inchnade (22). His father, Rajaram Inchnade, is attached to the main police control room.
Police said the accused, who was also injured in the accident, dumped the bike and fled the spot after the incident. Meanwhile, a passer-by admitted the badly injured Patel to Wockhardt Hospital in Mira Road. There were two operations conducted on him, but Patel’s condition remained critical. Later, he was moved to Cooper Hospital.
The father of the accused, Rajaram Inchnade, had told the Mira Road police that his son had not reached home after the incident and promised that he would present Sagar in front of the police for the arrest whenever he could. After 25 days of fighting for his life, Patel died at 9.15 am yesterday at Cooper Hospital. After a post-mortem, police handed over the scribe’s body to the family.

Senior Inspector Dhanaji Shirsagar of Mira Road police station said, “We arrested the accused Sagar after this incident and released him on bail. We added a Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC, after the death of Patel, and we’ve also booked him for rash driving.”
A distraught family Patel’s son Vaibhav said, “We came to know about the incident late night on May 4. My father regularly came home at 1.30 am, but on that day, he had not reached till 2 am. We were continuously trying to call him and, suddenly, one person told us that my dad had been admitted to hospital. We then rushed there.”
He added, “We didn’t even the see the face of the accused. Earlier, we had information that the accused Sagar had run away from the spot. But we also received information that Sagar himself had admitted my father… it’s still unclear. Bikers are very rash in Mira Road. We are very sure that this youth was riding his bike too fast and this caused the accident. The accused should be punished.”
