Two couples were accosted by men posing as policemen on the road next to Powai Lake in the wee hours yesterday, one of the girls was molested while the others were robbed of their mobile phones
Two men pretending to be plainclothes policemen molested an 18-year-old woman in Powai in the wee hours of Monday. A traffic policeman on his rounds got hint of trouble and intervened, finally nabbing the duo.

The Powai police have arrested the two accused, who groped the teenager on the pretext of frisking her. According to the police officials, the survivor is believed to be around 18 years of age. The two couples were going home via Powai lake area when they were stopped by two individuals.
Fake police officers
An officer from Powai police station said, “These two couples were walking near the Powai Lake, when two men arrived and claiming to be cops, took away their cell phones.
The duo then took one of the women to the bushes near the lake, and molested her, on the pretext of frisking her.” In a great stroke of luck, a cop attached to the Saki Naka traffic police division was passing by and noticed one of the two women standing alone beside the road.
When he asked her why she was standing alone, the woman revealed that three of her friends had been taken aside by two policemen, and that they were being interrogated. When the traffic police entered into the lake premises, they saw that one of the boys was waiting outside the bushes, while the two men robbed the other boy and frisked his girlfriend.

The two accused, identified as Prakash Shinde (37) and Prakash Kirpe (38), tried to flee as soon as they saw the real cops, in a rickshaw. The traffic officials chased them down and nabbed them.
They hauled them to Powai police station, where they were arrested. The officer added, “This incident took place around 1.30 am on Monday. The two accused have been involved in several cases of petty theft and robbery.”
The duo has been booked under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 170 (personating a public servant), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance) of the Indian Penal Code and has been remanded to police custody.
