Candidates who completed their Bachelor of Computer Applications from St Angelo’s Institute last year, have found themselves in a tough spot. Despite appearing for their final examination in August 2015, the students are yet to receive their degree certificate. Without this, they can neither pursue higher education nor apply for jobs.

The students only recently found out that the institute has no right to issue degree certificates. It simply operates as a study centre for Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) from where degrees are issued. Worse, KSOU’s recognition was withdrawn by University Grants Commission (UGC) in June 2015 for violating territorial jurisdiction.
A candidate who has taken admission at a Navi Mumbai college for masters education, said, “When we approached the state education department, they said they have no control over it as UGC regulates it directly.”
Abhilasha Srivastava from the All India Students’ Association (AISA) who approached the institute to help the students, said, “They have been running from pillar to post in vain. The institute has to take responsibility.”
When mid-day contacted the institute, they admitted to the delay in issuing the certificates. Lopa Valia, operations manager, St Angelo’s Institute, said, “We are the study centre for the KSOU, and this has been made clear to the students. The reason behind the delay is because the university is facing issues. We are hoping to resolve the problem soon.”
