Mumbai swimming body has no funds for district event

Despite swimming being an Olympic sport, the city's governing body — Greater Mumbai Amateur Aquatic Association (GMAAA) is struggling for funds to host the upcoming GMAAA district championships for age groups — U-17, U-14, U-12 and U-10 at the Tata Power pool, Chembur on April 10-11.

Pradeep Divgikar, President of GMAAA, claimed the lack of funds has stopped the association from rewarding national swimmers like Avantika Chavan, Monique Gandhi and Akansha Vora in the U-17 girls category and Jason Smith, Ishant Jaffer, Saumya Vora in the boys U-17.

GMAAA struggling
"Till now we have taken help from parents whose children swim to conduct tournaments. We are unable to provide for even basic needs like a proper kit when they go for state and national level meets. We are struggling and till now we somehow managed to conducts events on a smaller scale," said Divgikar.

"We request people to come forward and support the cause of swimming," he added.
