The first session on Day Four finished all hopes of an England comeback in the series. They are already 0-2 down and their chance of coming back into the game and making something out of it in the series was mercilessly destroyed by some very overpowering performance from Virat Kohli, who hit a career-best 235 and his 241 runs record eighth wicket partnership with Jayant Yadav, who became the first Indian No. 9 to score a Test 100.

That propelled India to post 631 runs and take a first innings lead of 231 runs yesterday. England are now staring at yet another humiliating finish after they were reduced to 182-6 in the second innings, still 49 runs behind to avoid an innings defeat.

It was pure masterclass from the Indian skipper who enthralled the vociferous Sunday crowd with some scintillating batting. He caused spectators to associate him with Sachin Tendulkar. He looked so much in control of everything that he did that at times it looked surreal. There were no sign of lethargy or tired limbs from the precious day's effort as he got down to business from the word go and brought up his 150 with a lofted straight drive off Jake Ball in the very first over of the day.

From then, it was business as usual and Kohli raced to 190 in no time with an array of strokes all around the wicket. He got good support from Yadav who was matching stroke for stroke with Kohli at that stage — Yadav scored 62 runs to Kohli's 65 at that point. Talking about that phase, Yadav said: "They were attacking me more and they had a very defensive field against Virat. That gave me an opportunity, I wouldn't say to cash in, but to put away the bad balls and that's what I believe resulted in both of us scoring at the same pace."
