Little did Dawood Ansari know that the feast at his sister’s residence in Bandra on Sunday night would be his last meal. The 21-year-old Panvel resident plunged to his death after the bike he was riding, with his two young cousins, crashed into a barricade of the flyover leading to Bandra Reclamation around 11 pm. The three vaulted over the barricade and landed on the road below. The children are reportedly battling for life.

Oveish Kachchi, a close friend of Ansari, said Ansari and his cousins had set off on a bike after dinner for some fresh air when tragedy struck. “The bike hung on the barricade as the three plunged below.”

The cause of the accident is yet to be established, but Ansari’s family and friends blamed the absence of streetlights at the accident spot for the tragedy. “The BMC is responsible for this,” alleged Salman Khan, a family friend.

Ansari’s cousins, aged 7 and 10, sustained injuries to the head and are said to be critical. “One boy’s face was almost smashed in the fall, and the other’s hand fractured. They also have minor injuries on the body,” said Khan.

They are being treated at Bhabha Hospital. Ansari, a carpenter, had married only four months ago.

A source from Reliance Infrastructure, which maintains streetlights on the flyover, said electric wires, bulbs and lights on this stretch are often stolen.
