Have you ever seen monkeys stealing with a thief's precision? If not, then the Cuffe Parade area will surely give you a glimpse of it. A monkey couple has terrorised the residents of the area as they randomly enter houses and make away with food and goods like perfumes, pen drives, printer cartridges and so on. The residents suspect that they are well trained in stealing expensive items and hence the police may have to be informed soon.

Both the monkeys have been spotted in different buildings of the area such as Basant residency, Sainara building, Pushp Vihar, Satnam and Maker Tower. Scared of these animals, residents of the societies keep themselves locked up in their houses. The animals even manage to climb up 15-19 storeys. Thankfully, no one has been hurt in the area but the situation is creating a lot of stress.

"These monkeys have been creating a menace in the area for the past 10 days. Though the forest department officials have visited the area twice to catch them, they returned empty-handed as the animals keep moving from one building to another. Every day they target a new house. We plan to approach the police and fire brigade," said Makrand Narvekar, a local corporator and a resident of the area.

Another resident Haresh Hathiramani said, "Many of us suspect that the monkeys are trained in scaring people and stealing goods. They target the houses in the afternoon when most of the people are out or resting. However, they disappear at night. They enter houses by opening locked sliding windows and make away with expensive items. This seems very unusual."
Neelam Rallan, (66), who lives with her husband in Sainara building, said, "On Monday while I was sleeping in the afternoon, I heard some unusual noise and woke up. When I went to the dining room, I found both the monkeys eating dry fruits kept on the table. The moment they saw me they threw a flower vase and ran away. I don't know how they entered by opening the locked window."
Shortage of staff?
Residents who have witnessed similar incidents, claimed that though they have called the forest department several times, they make excuses like shortage of staff. "I called the forest department twice in the past few weeks to get some help but they turned me down by sighting shortage of staff. Thereafter, I approached the fire brigade but even they ignored my calls," said Laura Dsouza, a resident of Sainara.

Official says
"It's just a rumour that we do not have enough staff. However, we have received a few calls related to monkey menace in Cuffe Parade area and we have taken them into account. Two days back our staff along with monkey catchers visited the area but as the animals keep moving from one building to another, we couldn't find them," said Santosh Kank, range forest officer.
