Mumbai: Woman, colleague held for making obscene calls to her mother-in-law

A saas-bahu tiff took an ugly turn when a woman got her colleague to call her mother-in-law at odd hours and spew obscenities at her.

A fight, which was earlier waged behind the closed doors of a Bhayandar residence, became police’s business on Wednesday when the cops arrested Amir Mobin Shaikh (28) for harassing the 45-year-old over the phone.

Since the daughter-in-law, Manda Kangne (27), who worked with Amir in a private firm, bore a grudge against the victim, they hatched a plan to make obscene phone calls to her late at night. At first, she ignored the calls, but when Amir kept calling her every day for around four days, she registered a complaint with the Vasai GRP.

A beautician at Antop Hill, the victim told the cops that she had been receiving calls between 10 pm and 11 pm from an unknown number, which is active only at night, and that she had even warned the caller of police action but he didn’t stop. “On Tuesday, when the victim was on her way home, she again got a call, which motivated her to speak to the Vasai GRP. She then lodged a complaint against the caller and the number was put under surveillance. The cops arrested Amir the next day from Bhayandar,” said Senior police Inspector, Mahesh Bagwe, Vasai GRP.

“Amir confessed to having done this on Manda’s request. She told us after her arrest that she wanted to take revenge on the victim. The duo was booked under Sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC. But they got out on bail the same day (Wednesday),” Bagwe added.

However, the family didn’t reveal which dispute led the daughter-in-law go to such lengths to exact revenge.
