Mumbai: Woman cop accuses sub-inspector of rape, he is untraceable

A female cop has accused a police sub-inspector (PSI) attached to the Nehru Nagar police station of raping her. The woman, an assistant police inspector (API), has alleged that the cop raped her on the pretext of marrying her. Ever since the case was registered with the Worli police, the accused has been untraceable.

According to police officials, the 26-year-old accused got posted with the Nehru Nagar police in December last year. Police sources said that the API, a divorced woman, had been in a relationship with the PSI for over a year. She then asked him to marry her and when he refused, she approached the police with a complaint.

The complainant initially sent an application to Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria last month, who then transferred it to the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Zone VI, Nishandar Sangram Singh. When contacted, Singh said, “An inquiry into the case was conducted by ACP Bhimdeo Rathod, who took statements from both the parties and then handed over the case papers to the Worli police station 10 days ago.”

A police official said the woman stays in Worli, which is why the case was sent to the Worli police. DCP (Zone III) S Jaykumar confirmed the case, saying, “We registered the offence on Sunday and the accused has been booked under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). No arrests have been made since the investigation is under way.”

Sources said the survivor, in her statement to the police, said the man had promised to marry her and had sexual intercourse with her on this pretext. The accused, however, has denied having any physical relationship with the woman or even making such a promise.

Police sources said the accused hails from Ahmednagar and worked as a schoolteacher before joining Mumbai Police last year. Since Sunday, the police have not been able to locate the whereabouts of the PSI. He is still on probation and might opt for anticipatory bail, the sources added.
