The woman was arrested in the last week of June by the Versova police for allegedly running a sex racket under the guise of a production house. mid-day had reported about the same in, 'Production house was front for sex den' (June 27). She had allegedly lured aspiring models with roles in movies and then taken pictures of them in the nude to later force the girls into prostitution. After a court sent her to judicial custody, she was lodged in the Byculla jail on July 1.

Concealed pregnancy
“The prisoner was 8 weeks pregnant, but she concealed this from the jail authorities. After she missed her menstrual cycle date, she began to get worried. She then started experiencing health issues such as headache, body ache and uneasiness. Following this, she would take medicines from the doctors in jail. Recently, she complained of excessive bleeding and was rushed to the JJ hospital,” a senior jail officer said.

Reluctant
A senior doctor from the JJ hospital said that a doctor at the jail first attended to the woman and since her bleeding did not stop, she was rushed to the hospital on July 27.

Aborted in jail
“Before she could be admitted to the hospital, she had already aborted [her pregnancy] at the jail,” the senior JJ hospital doctor told mid-day. The doctor added that the woman was unwilling to undergo post-abortion treatment, which was necessary for her to prevent any complications in future. She was discharged after being given basic medication and sent back to jail on August 1.

After the incident, the jail authorities carried out internal checks to find out how exactly she aborted the foetus. Some jail sources claimed that under the guise of petty health issues, she took pills and later collectively consumed them in order to terminate the pregnancy.

However, doctors believe that abortion can occur naturally or through anti-pregnancy tablets.
