According to the police, Constable Ganpat Chauhan (53), who was on night patrolling duty, spotted three youths having a heated argument with a taxi driver near the petrol pump at Sena Bhavan chowk in the wee hours of Tuesday.

“He went to the spot and was told by the taxi driver that the three were kicking his taxi as he refused to ply them to Parel. When Chauhan asked the three to calm down they started yelling at him and later started assaulting him,” said a police officer from the Shivaji Park police station.

The officer added that one of them hit Chauhan on his face with his lathi. The three then escaped on a motorcycle. The taxi driver too fled from the scene. Chauhan called up the control room and a police van rushed him to the KEM hospital. Chauhan got six stitches near his left eye.

Police lodged an offence against the three unknown people and launched a manhunt. On checking the CCTVs installed nearby they found that the number plate of the motorcycle had been captured in one camera.

Following this, the three accused, Akshay Ansurkar (19), Aniket Ansurkar (23) and Santikesh Rathod (18) were arrested later in the evening. The three, all residents of Prabhadevi, were reportedly under the influence of alcohol, the police said.
