Fares for local trains to suburbs set to rise from January 1 to help repay the loan taken for Mumbai Urban Transport Project.
Mumbaikars will have to shell out more for their daily commute on suburban trains from January 1.
Train passengers in Mumbai will have to pay Rs 2 to Rs 4 more for their daily journey as the Railways have decided to increase the surcharge on suburban train services in the metropolitan due. The earning from surcharge will help railways to repay the loan taken for Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), which is involved in the upgradation of the rail network in Mumbai.

The enhanced surcharge will, however, not be applicable for travel up to 10 km or less.
Existing and increased MUTP surcharge for different classes of travel and distances of journey is as follows:
