The Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) has given final clearance to the construction of a world-class convention center on an 18.5-acre plot in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Confirming the same, MMRDA Joint Project Director Dilip Kawatkar said, “Finally the convention center has received a final clearance from the MoEF and now the construction on the plot can start.”

In March this year, the state’s Experts Appraisal Committee (STAC) of the environment ministry had recommended a proposed convention center and commercial complex in BKC for clearance which will be spread across 75,000 square meters and will accommodate 25,000 people. The center will come up on plot C-64 in BKC.

The convention center that will come up in BKC will be bigger than the one at Nariman Point which has 35 office towers each with a built-up area of 2 lakh square feet on an average.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) won the plot in the bidding process and after receiving clearance from the environment ministry last month they have started the work. The cost of the plot was Rs 1,104 crore and it will be spending around Rs 7,566 crore on the construction of this world-class convention center, which will be ready by 2016.

According to the plan, an 18-storey tower along with four basements for parking, a commercial complex and a 348-room block of flats will be coming up.
