Disappointed over the Maharashtra government's decision to phase out taxis which are older then 20 years, Mumbai taxi drivers' union head A L Quadros said today that it is a "sudden" decision.

Clarifying that the taxi drivers' union would not stage any kind of agitation against the move, he said that taxi drivers themselves show willingness to phase out their vehicles once it is old.

"All of a sudden, a decision was taken by the government. Four years ago they had reduced the limit to 25 years," Quadros told PTI.

He said that before taking the decision, the government should have consulted the union.

"We were not consulted. Around, 4500 taxis will stop plying on the roads of the city by the end of July 31, 2014," he said.

Terming the decision as "wrong", he said 1600 taxis have been replaced from January-April 2013.

A couple of days ago, minister of state for transport Sachin Ahir said that old taxis and auto rickshaws plying the Mumbai Metropolitan Region would need to obtain fitness certificates.u00a0
