Murray dominated the final to win 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 and exact devastating revenge for his defeat to Federer in last month's Wimbledon final at the All England Club.

The Scot dominated in almost every department, outscoring Federer on the forehand and backhand and keeping unforced errors to a minimum.

Murray's gold is Britain's first medal in Olympic tennis since 1920 and first men's singles medal since Josiah Ritchie won gold in London 104 years ago.

The bronze medal went to Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, who beat Serbia’s Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-4. Forty-five minutes later, Murray returned to try and bring Britain more glory by winning the mixed doubles with Laura Robson. At the time of going to press, Murray was one set away from winning a second gold in a few magical hours on Centre Court as he and Laura Robson took the first set of their Olympic mixed doubles final 6-2 against Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi.

The pair, who needed a wild card to get into the tournament, had come through three tight matches to reach the final, including two yesterday, and were up against the top seeds.
