My husband does not like my singing pursuits

Dear Diana |

Dear Diana, I am a 26-year-old housewife. Everything is fine in our house except that nobody in my in-laws side likes me to continue my passion ufffd singing. I used to practise regularly before my marriage but since I shifted to my husband's place, I can't continue doing what I love to.

My husband does not like my singing pursuits

I tried explaining to them that I’ve been singing since childhood. But my husband doesn’t care and wants me to give up music completely. I thought he’d be supportive but he finds it embarrassing that his wife sings and plays the sitar. It’s depressing to be a part of a family that doesn’t appreciate my art.

Dear Shama,
I can understand your predicament and what you must have to undergo. Your in-laws find your singing and playing the sitar strange. That’s because they are not musically inclined and don’t know have a clue about music. Their indifference should not affect your riyaaz. You can continue with it. You have to make them realise that people have different passions. Some love to cook, others love to do gardening or dressing up and still others love to read. Similarly, you love to sing. For you, it is a hobby and you have been blessed with a good voice. Remember not everyone has it in him or her to sing. You are unique so indulge in your passion as long as it does not affect your other responsibilities at home. Somehow you have to convince them.
