Meanwhile, Defending champion Andy Murray survived a testing encounter with Stanislas Wawrinka to reach the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters yesterday as David Ferrer saved three match points to progress.
Second seed Murray won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 under the roof at the Qi Zhong stadium. Earlier, Spain's Ferrer edged into the last eight when he beat injured compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero 1-6, 7-5, 6-2. American 10th seed Andy Roddick reached the last eight after an impressive 6-3, 6-4 win over Nicolas Almagro, seeded seven, of Spain.
