Don't be misled by his canary yellow sneakers. This is one serious fashion designer who has survived a decade in the business. Narendra Kumar celebrates the big 10 this Thursday, with a fashion showcase inspired by Mumbai's women

There can be only one Narendra Kumar.

He is the thinking man's designer, with an opinion on everything under the sun, from Obama politics to Ogilvy's new ad.

Some of those opinions find themselves translated on ramp to create spectacular fashion show concepts.

He is the guy you often find on party pages, wearing a different hat each night (sometimes even a Cleopatra wig).

This Mumbai designer has spun modern clothing ideas, some of which have made it to actors like John Abraham's closet, for a decade. And Nari's in the mood for celebration.

On Thursday, he will salute 10 years of his homebred label at, what else, a fashion show at a South Mumbai lounge.

"It's a celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of my first store at Wodehouse Road in 2000," he says.

The show that he's called Sounds of Mumbai, will draw its strength and silhouettes from the resilient, confident and ambition-driven women of Mumbai, Nari says.

The metropolis where Nari was born and grew into a successful designer is also the one that gifts women freedom.

"Women in Mumbai are free to express themselves, whether through clothes, in opinions or lifestyle. I can't imagine that in another city, even Delhi."

His silhouettes, Nari says are inspired by the city, where space is at a premium. "We live and work in minimal spaces. My clothes reflect that. They are cut close to the body, and carry minimal fuss."

What Nari learnt about Fashion in 10 years, you learn in 10 minutes
Thou shall cultivate thy mind, and style shall follow.
Thou shall experiment with fashion.
Thou shalt not follow trends blindly.
Thou shall dress your age... at least, in the mind.
Thou shall commit brand adultery avoid wearing a single brand from head to toe.
Thou shall inspect the inside of the garment before buying; it ensures value for money.
Thou shalt not wear 'buttcrack' jeans.
Thou shall wear appropriate innerwear when sporting low-waist jeans.
Thou shalt not over accessorise. No big earrings, big shoes and big bags on one night.
Thou shall kill a fashion rule as soon as thy hears one.

By looking at the bigger picture; what you want your brand to look like, especially in the competitive market. You have to keep the passion going day after day. Keep your head on your shoulders.

Glamour can sway you off your feet. Evolve, but stay true to your innate style. Be informed about fashion.
