After spending a good part of the summer slamming the Indian cricket team during their Test series loss, former England captain Nasser Hussain now uses 'donkey' term to stress on India's fielding woes
Nasser Hussain, the former England captain turned television expert and writer is playing true to form. He has spent a good part of the English summer slamming the Indian cricketers and their employers, the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Of course, India's cricketers have provided him good fodder too with their poor performance that led to a 0-4 thrashing at the hands of the hosts in the Test series which concluded at the Oval last month.
Hussain, who led England in two Test series against India in 2001 and 2002, has now slammed the visiting teams' fielding. While commentating on Sky during India's T20 international against England on Wednesday, Hussain said after watching Parthiv Patel drop a catch off Kevin Pietersen at third man: "I would say the difference between the two sides is the fielding. England are all-round a good fielding side. I do believe that India have few... three or four very good fielders and one or two donkeys in the field still."
The comment did not go down well with BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla and former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin. "One should adopt restraint while making observations about players. Commentators should not make such comments. We will definitely look into it. Every player has to be respected irrespective of his performance. I don't think this comment was appropriate," Shukla was quoted as saying.
Azharuddin, now a politician, said Hussain should apologise to the team. "There are many ways of commenting, but calling players 'donkey' is unbecoming of a player of his stature," said Azharuddin.
It can be recalled that Hussain was involved in an on-air spat with fellow commentator Ravi Shastri during the second Test at Trent Bridge. The former England captain felt that the Decision Review System should have been used in this series while Shastri felt BCCI had good reason to doubt it.
Hussain is not the only former England captain to attack Indian players. During the same Test, Ashes-winning skipper Michael Vaughan, on Twitter, accused VVS Laxman of applying Vaseline on his bat. And he got away.
