Navi Mumbai: NMMC promises Rs 11,000 bonus, reduces it to Rs 5,900

Contract staff at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), who were earlier told they will get a whopping bonus of Rs 11,000, are distressed as the civic body has given them only Rs 5,900 after revising it.

In the month of September with an eye on the state assembly elections, the corporation had sanctioned a bonus of Rs 11,000 each for the contract workers. Earlier the administration had suggested Rs 5,000 as bonus while the Standing Committee recommended Rs 5,500. How-ever, the General Body increased it to Rs 11,000.

Now the civic body is blaming the state government for the revised amount. Commenting on the issue, Jagannath Sinnarkar, deputy municipal commissioner of NMMC said, “Earlier, we had sanctioned a bigger package to contract workers. However as this amount is large, an approval from the state government is necessary for it. Without their consent we cannot proceed with the proposal and hence we have now revised the bonus package.”

“The bonus was sanctioned before elections and now after the elections they suddenly decide to revise it and give us that sum. This means that the sole intention of the decision taken in the month of September was to lure the staff to vote for the ruling party” said a contractual civic employee.

The corporation had sanctioned Rs 13,000 as bonus for permanent employees. But the Standing Committee made it Rs 13,400 and the General Body further increased it to Rs 14,000. Over 6,500 employees work in NMMC, out of which only 2,500 are permanent.
