It appears that Navi Mumbaikars love playing with fire. According to a recent survey conducted by the local fire brigade, it has been discovered that over 250 buildings in the region have flouted fire safety norms, and lack adequate safety and security equipment. In most of these surveyed buildings, the basic fire-fighting mechanism, such as fire extinguishers, landing valve, fire hosepipe etc, was absent, thus jeopardising the lives of the occupants.

Vijay Rane, deputy chief fire officer, Navi Mumbai Fire Brigade, said, "We have surveyed around 400 towers that fall under Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's (NMMC) jurisdiction and have discovered that around 200 of them have failed to install basic fire-fighting mechanism. We have issued notices to these towers, asking them to install all the necessary equipment at their earliest."

As per the survey, most of theu00a0 offenders were reported from Kharghar, which falls under CIDCO's jurisdiction. Of the 60 buildings surveyed in the area, the fire brigade discovered that 80 per cent (45) of them had flouted fire safety norms.
N M Rathod, fire officer, Kalamboli Fire Station, said, "We have initiated a crackdown on the buildings flouting safety norms. In the first phase, we surveyed 60 buildings in Kharghar and found that 45 of them have violated norms. We have sent notices, asking the societies to fix the irregularities in the next few days. However, almost all of them seem to have ignored our warning. We think that most of the buildings in Kharghar, Kalamboli and Kamothe have neglected fire safety norms."
The punishment
According to the officials, stringent action would be initiated against those towers that fail to rectify their errors within the given deadline. The fire brigade has decided to cut their water and power supply. Also, a case may be filed as a last resolve.u00a0 "We have sent them notices and will send them reminders for fulfilment too. However, if any building fails to do the needful, we will ask the NMMC and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company, to cut their water and power supply. However, even then if the respective buildings fail to do the needful, we will choose the legal option," said Rane.
Stating that since the process of issuing notices was underway, both Navi Mumbai and CIDCO Fire Brigade, refused to furnish details.
