The Indian Armed Forces not only saves lives, but sometimes even brings people back from the dead. Lt Commodore Vikrant Shukla, who is posted at INS Shivaji, saved a young man from drowning on Sunday.
Shukla was near Pavana dam in Lonavla when he heard a group of boys screaming for help. When he rushed there, he was told a youth in his 20s was drowning. Shukla immediately plunged into the water and brought the boy out.
No pulse
An eyewitness, who did not wish to be named said, "The man seemed to be dead. He had no pulse either." So, Shukla used a screwdriver to force open his mouth to give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. By that time, an ambulance had arrived and the youth was taken to the Amby Valley City Hospital. There, after an overnight stay, he was discharged.
When contacted, Shukla confirmed the incident, but refused to divulge any details, saying, "I am not authorised to talk to the media." The youth who was rescued too, did not want us to publish his name, said, "I don't want to disturb my parents who are in Mumbai. They are clueless about my near escape from the death."
Attempts to contact the doctor who treated the boy were unsuccessful.
