Call it over exertion or acute apathy towards the subject of discussion, but a member of the upper house dozed off yesterday in the legislature.

The Legislative Council was in for a rude shock when NCP legislator Sandeep Bajoria, dozed off while his party colleague and opposition leader in the house Dhananjay Munde, was tearing the government apart over the brutal gang rape and killing of a 15-year-old school girl in Kopardi village in Ahmednagar.

Bajoria woke up when some legislators sent him a missive through assistants who are posted inside the house. The MLC stood up and left the house. He returned after some time. Bajoria told reporters that he had not dozed off, but was mulling with his head down.

Senior NCP leaders refused to comment on the issue. But many BJP and Congress legislators said that such irresponsible acts gave a bad name to Parliamentarians.

“If he was unwell or felt like sleeping, he should have excused himself,” said a BJP legislator. “It may happen when discussions get boring, but Munde was making a strong point and it was expected of Bajoria that he concentrate on his leader’s speech,” he said.

Replying to a debate on the Kopardi incident, CM Devendra Fadnavis told the lower house that the government would ensure death sentence for all three accused, who were arrested last week.

“I appeal to the people of Maharashtra to stop agitation over the issue. Special prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam will represent the state in the fast-track court,” he said.

He denied leniency by the police in arresting the culprits. “The police reached the crime spot in 31 minutes,” he said, adding that he could not visit the family because he was on a tour of Russia and then went to Pandharpur and Delhi for official work. “However, I was in the loop and collecting all relevant information in the heinous crime,” he told the house.
