After MiD DAY reported the story on Wednesday, the women's commission directed the local police at the victim's village to act against the miscreants

There was high drama at the office of National Commission for Women (NCW) in Delhi on Thursday. On June 29 MiD DAY had narrated the travails of this 24-year-old woman (identity concealed on request) who has nowhere to go in her ninth month of pregnancy.

Her in-laws have been ousted from their village as she married a person of a different caste. Her father in law, a mosque cleric, was beaten up and paraded naked by her parents and other villagers after she fled with her husband who she had secretly married.

After the story came out, Love Commandos, an NGO took responsibility of the couple. They took them to NCW for protection and had written a letter to the chairperson listing their situation. However, while taking the stairs at the office (there's no lift), the woman started experiencing labour pains.

MiD DAY photographer Rajeev Tyagi who was at the spot helped her, along with other members of the media, receive adequate care. Meanwhile, NCW informed the SP of Bulandshahar about the case and he was asked to take action. The woman was taken on a stretcher to Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital.

"We thank MiD DAY for raising this issue at the right time. We want the NCW to take immediate and strict action against the khap panchayat in this village. The woman is in stable condition. Doctors say she might deliver in the next two to three days. We have shifted her to a private hospital. We don't want to disclose the name considering the safety of the couple," said Sanjoy Sachdev, chairman of Love Commandos.
