Nearly 1,400 litres of alcohol seized on dry days

Excise officials stepped up their vigilance as the dry period kicked in after 6 pm on October 13, seizing alcohol worth Rs 9.8 lakh from Mumbai

Excise officials continued to crack down on transportation of illegal alcohol. After the dry period began in the state, in the run-up to the state assembly elections, officials have managed a haul of nearly 1,400 litres of booze from various locations in Mumbai.

The dry period kicked in after 6 pm on October 13, and will continue till 6 pm today. On October 13 and October 14, Excise officials recorded a total of 39 instances of alcohol being seized. 30 of those are in the suburbs, where authorities managed to capture 1,006 litres of booze worth R9.2 lakh. 29 people were arrested in connection with these incidents.

Three major cases were seen in Vazira Naka (Borivli), Kalina and Sahar Road in Andheri (East).

In Borivli, 14 boxes of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and 47 boxes of beer, pegged at Rs 1.5 lakh, were held. In Kurla, 11 boxes of IMFL, two boxes of country liquor (each box containing a total of 180 litres) were captured.

In Kalina, seven boxes of country liquor, one of IMFL, valued at a total of Rs 12,205 was caught.

In Andheri, six boxes of IMFL, four boxes of country liquor, collectively worth Rs 56,000 were seized.

In the island city, officials recorded nine cases on October 13. Nine people were arrested in all cases and a total of 375 litres of alcohol, worth R68,807, was seized. No interceptions were made yesterday, at the time of going to press.

“All these cases were observed after the dry days began. We are on constant rounds to ensure no illegal alcohol is transported,” said Subhash Bodke, superintendent (suburbs), state excise department.

mid-day had reported yesterday that the excise department had seized 14,000 litres of alcohol during the one month of imposed code of conduct.

The booze was captured while being transported without a permit/licence.
