According to the Kasturba Marg police, the victims have been identified as Vinod Sachin Kashi (19) and Akshay Ashok Kadam (18). The boys had gone to visit Kanheri Caves with six other friends. Vinod was sitting pillion on the motorcycle, which Akshay was riding.
Mitesh Gurav, one of their friends said that after visiting the caves, all friends met at park's gate at 1 pm to drink water.
It was here when Akshay, a TYBcom student, decided to go for another ride towards the caves on his own. Since Vinod too was keen on a second round, he decided to accompany Akshay.
The police officers investigating the case said that the teenagers, both residents of Charkop, were speeding towards the caves when the accident occurred. The eyewitnesses told the police that the boys overtook a couple on a motorcycle at breakneck speed.
"From the opposite direction, a jeep, with police officers in it was heading for election bandobast duty. It was a head-on collision between the two vehicles that took place at a blind curve where none of them could see each other. The impact of collision was such that the motorcycle after hitting the jeep was thrown back several meters," said a police officer from Kasturba Marg police station.
The police have arrested the driver of the private vehicle, who has been identified as Sunil Aangne (50). He has been booked for rash and negligent driving.
"We have arrested the driver of the jeep. Further investigations are on," said Rajendra Thakur, senior police
