Neena Prasad: Mohiniyattam has overcome gender issues

Dating back to the 11th century and one of the two popular Indian Classical dance forms to have originated from Kerala (the other one being Kathakali), Mohiniyattam is aesthetically and technically different from other Classical dance forms. This Friday, Neena Prasad will take stage to present Samanvaya… A Confluence Of Grace And Music, and showcase a mix of music, dance and abhinaya (drama). Here, Prasad discusses Mohiniyattam and its evolution.

Has Mohiniyattam become more adaptable for the younger generation of dancers?
Dancers of today perform extensively, and conduct lectures, demonstrations and workshops. Through organisations like the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY), the art form has come closer to the younger generation. Thus, over the years, be it through any platform, solo or group, Mohiniyattam performers have brought due recognition to the dance form.

Is it appealing to younger audiences, too?
Yes, a lot of youngsters attend Mohiniyattam performances. In fact, the younger generation has been showing genuine interest in theatre and Classical arts. They look forward to different forms of enjoyment. Since a lot of Bollywood dance and reality shows are repetitive, younger minds opt for Classical performances for an artistic experience.

How are the exponents of Mohiniyattam bringing it closer to the masses?
Indian Classical dance forms have earned global appeal, and Mohiniyattam is no exception. This female dance form has overcome gender issues, and addresses modern themes like women's empowerment to keep the new audience interested.

How has Mohinyattam evolved over the years?
It is recognised for its fresh appeal. In most theatre and dance festivals, Mohiniyattam is known for a deep and serious aesthetic experience of Kerala theatre. But this does not mean that it is not for the modern audience. Rather, it stands on a pedestal higher in terms of its uniqueness in the hearts of connoisseurs. Easy takers (dancers not thorough with the intricacies of Mohiniyattam) cannot easily manipulate the rigid technique of the form. Hence, there aren't too many Mohiniyattam performers. Yet, those who have excelled in the technique, and are blessed with talent and creativity, are the most sought-after performers in today's cultural spaces.
