Corporator on the run after sending PCMC engineer to ICU for 'raising encroachment issue' in meeting
A civil engineer was severely punished yesterday for doing his job honestly. Vithal Madhik, working with C-ward (civil) of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), was allegedly beaten and abused by local corporator Surdas Gaikwad.
Madhik, who is in his late 30s, is in the ICU at YCM Hospital.
Authorities said doctors had decided to keep Madhik under observation for 24 hours to ensure his condition was not deteriorating.
According to a source in the PCMC, Gaikwad has encroached on a piece of land and even built a compound around it. "Even though the court has given an order to break the compound, he and his men never allowed us to do our work. So, during the meeting, the issue was brought up and that angered Gaikwad," said the source.
According to Devendra Borak, a junior engineer (civil), Madhik was beaten up for performing his duty. "It was around 1.30 pm that we had a meeting with Gaikwad regarding compound work at his building. After the meeting, he started beating up and abusing Madhik for bringing up the issue in the meeting," said Borak.
Soon after the incident, a complaint was registered at the Bhosari police station against Gaikwad under IPC sections 349 (force), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 404 (dishonest misappropriation of property possessed by deceased person) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50).
According to Bhosari police officials, Gaikwad is absconding and a search team is on the lookout for him.
