This weekend, two mythologists will unravel myths that show Hanuman, Bhim and Sita in lead roles instead of supporting acts as depicted in popular versions of the epics

New myths to host Hanuman, Bhim and Sita in lead roles

In the pages of Valmiki's Ramayana, Hanuman is portrayed in a supporting role, as a devotee and follower of Lord Rama. However, did you know that there are mythological renditions wherein the monkey god takes the central role?

"There are certain stories, especially versions from the East, which bring out Hanuman's conflict with Mahiravan (Ravana's brother), replete with black magic and sacrificial elements. There's also a gory battle and his meeting with his 'son',"
shares mythologist-author Utkarsh Patel of Talking Myths Project. This Saturday, Patel, along with co-founder Arundhuti Dasgupta, will shed light on such stories at a talk titled, The Masks Of A Hero: Folk Renditions of Hanuman, Bhim And Sita. The talk is open to anyone above 16 years of age.

It aims to unravel myths wherein the trio plays a far more nuanced and colourful roles as opposed to the supporting acts portrayed in the popular version of the epics.

"For instance, in certain Folk renditions, Sita stands out as a strong personality, instead of the sad and docile portrayal that we are so used to," adds Patel.

As part of research, the duo combed through Ramayana by Chandrabati, a lesser-known retelling by a female author, besides the works of Durga Bhagvat and Verrier Elwin. "We've also researched on a number of myths from the tribes of Odisha, the Bhils and the Dangs in Gujarat and those of Central India."

On May 20, 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm
At Trilogy by The Eternal Library, first floor, Raghuvanshi Mill Compound, Lower Parel.
