New parking area at Pune station to perk up motorists' lot

Parking at the Pune railway station, amid a clutter of two-, three-, four- and sometimes even eight-wheelers, is not for those short on patience. Mercifully, though, the railway administration is developing a new parking space, 6,000 square metres in area, close to the station. The work is in the final stages and the lot will be ready for use in the next two months, officials said.

Daily, around 140 long-distance and other trains pull up at and depart from the railway station, bringing in more than two lakh passengers. And currently, there is hardly any space in front of the station where the relatives who come to pick them up or drop them can park their vehicles.

The restricted space in front of the station does not provide for more than 100 four-wheelers and 200 two-wheelers.

Will ease congestion
Pune divisional railway manager, Suneet Sharma, said, “This move will ease parking woes. A private contract to run the parking lot has been awarded to the highest bidder. The area we have marked for the lot is just behind the reservation centre, and it is being developed into a parking space.”

Entry to the lot will be from the road coming from Maldhakka Chowk, just before the station where the railway hospital is located. Passengers hope it will bring order to the chaotic parking situation at the station.

“Parking is always a mess near the station. Many times, autos are parked illegally in VIP lanes at the pickup and drop points, while traffic cops keep busy by controlling vehicular flow or collecting fines from the public. Hope this new lot decongests space,” said Dinesh Adhav, a frequent railway passenger.
