New parking zone? Between barricades protecting flyovers

Mumbai's space-starved vehicle owners have taken to parking where flyovers are being constructed. Not only are they managing to do this for free, but they are able to avoid the dreaded traffic police towing vans.

A stretch of Dr Ambedkar Road bet-ween Lalbaug and Sion, where flyover work is underway, is one such site, where two-wheelers and even trucks have been parked between barricades erected at the centre of the road.

An official from MMRDA said, "We know that parking at such sites is illegal, but people are forced do this because of space constraints."

MiD DAY visited the site and discovered that the barricades that have been erected to prevent mishaps on the spots have been breached by parked private vehicles that simply ignore banners, warning drivers about the spots being accident-prone.

Kamal Gupta, executive director, J Kumar, the contractor building the Hindmata flyover said, "I will have to check this out before commenting. Vehicles might be using the space as a temporary measure due to lack
of space."

Meanwhile, an official from Simplex Infrastructure, yet another contractor involved in flyover construction on Ambedkar Road said, "We have deputed nearly 20 security persons to prevent private vehicles from parking at the site."

Deputy Commissioner of Police traffic (city), Harish Baijal said he had no comments to offer on the issue.

A member of the Dominos outlet at Hindmata on Dr Ambedkar Road explained, "We have sought the BMC's permission for parking, as we don't have any other spot near our outlet."
