Off-spinner Jeetan Patel removed key batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Venkatsai Laxman as New Zealand restricted India to 392-6 at lunch on the second day of the first Test on Friday.
Tendulkar (40) offered a simple return catch to Patel, disappointing a sizeable crowd that was expecting to celebrate his 50th Test ton on Diwali, the festival of lights.

Laxman was trapped leg before for 40 after he had shared 66 runs for the fourth wicket with Tendulkar on a slow pitch at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Debutant Kane Williamson picked up his first Test wicket when Suresh Raina (three) offered a sharp chance to Brendon McCullum at extra cover shortly before the lunch break.
The Indians were slow off the blocks after resuming at the overnight 329-3, managing to put on just 29 runs in the first hour of play.
Tendulkar started off tentatively before opening up to pull a bouncer from paceman Chris Martin to the square-leg for his first boundary of the day, which came after six overs had been bowled.
But the star batsman, who scored the first of his six double centuries against New Zealand at the same venue in 1999, was uncharacteristically subdued during his nearly three-hour stay at the crease.
He hit five fours in his 133-ball knock.
Laxman survived a close chance when an inside-edge off Martin missed his stumps narrowly but he made light of the scare by lofting the bowler over gully in the same over.
New Zealand were set back by a groin injury to debutant paceman Hamish Bennett who did not come out to bowl Friday.
