It is that time of the year again when the usual student pursuits of merrymaking and gallivanting around town come to a halt. Board exams are round the corner and these days SSC and HSC students can be found buried in their books.

While there is no substitute for hard work, some dos and don'ts need to be kept in mind to ensure your board exams are smooth and free of worry.
MiD DAY gives you some expert tips on how to keep yourself calm during the exams and pass with flying colours.

** Don't revise till the very last minute; it will only build tension. If you have prepared well, do not worry and trust your memory. The answers will come to you once you start reading the questions carefully.
** Don't use any unfair means; five years of debarment stares at you if you are caught.
** Don't attempt the paper in a haphazard manner; try to maintain a logical pattern so that evaluator does not get muddled during correction.
** Don't attempt two different parts of the same question in different places; you'll end up frustrating the teacher checking your paper.
** Don't repeat your answers; paper checkers are no fools to miss this. It will only anger them and you will not gain anything and only lose time.
** Don't forget to recheck your answer sheet at the end of the paper; you may have missed an important point somewhere.
** Don't forget to draw margins on both sides of the answer sheet and tally the question number of your answer with the number on the question paper. Before doing any major change or cancellation on the answer sheet, don't forget to take the invigilator's signature.
** Once a paper is over, don't try to solve the question paper again at home to calculate your marks, especially if the paper has not gone as well as you would have liked it to. It affects self-esteem and prevents you from concentrating on the next paper.u00a0

** Make sure that your parents or tuition teacher has a photocopy of the admit card you need to get into the examination hall so that just in case you forget yours someplace, someone you know has a replacement for it.
** Visit the exam centre beforehand so that there is no difficulty finding it on the day of your board exam.
** While checking out the exam centre, also make sure your roll number has been listed on the board displaying the seating arrangement and note down the classroom you are going to be in.
** Make a request to the school or board authorities beforehand if you require special arrangements at the exam centre. For example, if you have recently met with an accident and can not climb the stairs, request the exam centre to allot you a seat in a ground floor classroom.
** On the day of the exam, first check under your table for unwanted things that may be hidden there without your knowledge. If you find anything, dispose it of before the exam begins.
** Attend nature's call if you have to before the exam begins. It saves time during the exam.
** If you are carrying any chits or similar items to refresh your memory while on the way to the exam centre, be sure you leave these outside the exam hall. A small mistake can mean a five-year wait before you can again appear for the exams.
** Recheck your roll number while signing the attendance sheet.
** Read the question paper carefully and calmly. You should not be disheartened if you can not remember the answers to some of the questions immediately. The mind takes time to revive its memory.
** Attempt the easier questions first, as it saves time and boosts the morale too.
** Try not to leave any question unattempted. Try to answer all questions even if you do not know the complete answers. A few correct points can earn you some marks.
** Manage time well and keep a time limit for answering each question. For example, if there are 20 questions, keep 2-4 minutes for the easier ones and 5-7 minutes for the trickier ones.
