Not Iranian by a long shot

Barely a week old, Brun Cafe may turn into the newest, most happeningu00a0hangout in Juhu. For the under 30s

Juhu Circle is unremarkable even on a traffic-free day, which is rare. So we were surprised when the drab junction showed colour and life on a muggy weekday.

Brun Cafe opened its doors exactly a week ago, and unsurprisingly filled up quickly, considering its proximity to colleges.

When we visited on a lazy evening, the buzz of activity centred round the two pool tables as a few 20-somethings took turns in pocketing a shot.

Our plate of Bruschetta Pomodere (Rs 130) was generously topped with juicy cubes of tomato and flecks of basil, all doused in olive oil.

And while the low lounge seating has a nice laidback vibe, it's not the most comfortable arrangement when you're digging into a loaded bruschetta.

The menu promised Parmesan cheese in the bruschetta, which we missed, but it didn't ruin the start to our meal.

The Chicken Alio (Rs 170) had nailed the taste delicately flavoured with herbs, white wine and olive oil but the bite-sized portions were far from tender.

The reason, we were told, was because the white meat was grilled and not boiled, which really didn't make sense. Not buying this one.

The Chicken Soup (Rs 105) on the other hand can beat the hell out the blues on a grey, damp day.

As we waited for the main course an Exotic Vegetarian Pizza (Rs 170) with "exotic" vegetables and sun-dried tomatoes, there was some confusion about Brun Cafe's loyalties.

The walls painted in reds and yellows with posters of rockers (some unusual suspects punk rocker Joe Strummer and Pink Floyd's Syd Barett and some usual John Lennon) seem to be a rage with these new campus friendly start-ups.

But much like the grilled chicken theory, the unrecognisable Techno blasting off the speakers didn't quite cut it. The friend at the table declared that the exotic vegetarian pizza was an epic fail.

Her crib: no artichoke, no zucchini. Why call a pizza with bell peppers and capsicum an exotic pizza? But at least one of us at the table was happy that the pizza wasn't packed with artery-clogging cheese.

There's room for improvement and we're pretty sure that Brun Cafe will get there (we hear the chefs learnt the ropes at Indigo, Colaba and Vie Lounge).

Till then, we'll stick to the snacks and go back for more of that delicious Dark Cold Coffee (Rs 90)

Brun Cafe didn't know we were there. The GUIDE reviews anonymously and pays for meals.
