V L Shedmaake, a head constable attached to the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), attempted suicide inside the Santacruz police station on Friday, by slitting his throat with a blade.

Shedmaake was resting in a room on the premises on Saturday when one of his colleagues heard a suspicious sound from the room. His colleague rushed in to the room and saw Shedmaake lying in a pool of blood. The constable informed senior officers present at the police station, and Shedmaake was rushed to Asha Parekh hospital, where he underwent a surgery.

The police have found the blade he used to slit his throat in the resting room.

Meanwhile, senior officers are questioning Shedmaake's colleagues but haven't managed to find any clues.

"He was unusually quiet on Friday and did not interact with anyone. I was shocked to see him take this drastic a step," Shedmaake's close friend and colleague, said.

The police are looking at all possible angles that could have led him to attempt suicide. According to the police, investigations can proceed only after Shedmaake is able to give his statement.

While the reason behind the attempt is not known, sources in the Santacruz police station say he could have been depressed due to domestic problems. Senior Police Inspector Madhukar Chaudhari, Santacruz police station, said, "He had personal problems which drove him to attempt to end his life. He is currently under medical care, and according to doctors, his condition is stable. We are investigating the case."

In recent similar incidents, on May 25, 47 year-old traffic police constable Vinayak Vittan Koldivilkar committed suicide at Worli Police Camp, hanging himself from a ceiling fan.

On March 7, 30 year-old police constable Deepak Vitkare posted at the American Consulate committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon.
