'Oblivion' tops weekend box office with USD 38.2m earning

Tom Cruise's sci-fi thriller 'Oblivion' has made a 38.2-million-dollar debut in the US and in the process topped the box office, according to the studio estimates.

That domestic haul comes on top of 33.7 million dollars that the movie made in overseas markets, where the film began rolling out a week earlier.

The movie has raised its overseas total to 112 million dollars and its worldwide receipts to 150.2 million dollars, the New York Post reported.


The movie took in 13.3 million dollars on opening day on Friday and 14.9 million dollars on Saturday.

The previous weekend’s top film, baseball drama ‘42,’ slipped to second-place with 18 million dollars in its second weekend.

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ got a lift with 40 million dollars, most of it coming from a 33-million-dollar debut in China, the action sequel has topped 200 million dollars internationally and 300 million dollars worldwide.

1. ‘Oblivion,’- 38.2 million dollars
2. ‘42’ - 18 million dollars
3. ‘The Croods’ - 9.5 million dollars
4. ‘Scary Movie 5’ - 6.3 million dollars
5. ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ - 5.8 million dollars
6. ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ - 4.7 million dollars
7. ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ - 4.5 million dollars
8. ‘Evil Dead’ - 4.1 million dollars
9. ‘Jurassic Park” in 3-D, 4 million dollars
10. ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’ - 3 million dollars
